The threat of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack continues to wreak havoc in these cloud infrastructures. In addition to DDoS attacks, a new form of attack known as Economic Denial of Sustainability (EDoS) attack has emerged in recent years. EDoS which is unique to cloud infrastructure may not be easily detected as with DDoS. Although EDoS attack is small at the moment, it is expected to grow in the near future in tandem with the growth in cloud usage. As EDoS has a major impact economically, it can considered to be more serious than DDoS and many defence and mitigation mechanisms have been proposed to combat these attacks. This paper introduces EDoS and how it differs from DDoS. The existing mitigation techniques are described and the drawbacks of these techniques are explained.

Enhanced Mechanism to Detect and Mitigate Economic Denial of Sustainability (EDoS) Attack in Cloud Computing Environments

Cloud computing (CC) is the next revolution in the Information and Communication Technology arena. CC is often provided as a service comparable to utility services such as electricity, water, and telecommunications. Cloud service providers (CSP) offers tailored CC services which are delivered as subscription-based services, in which customers pay based on the usage. Many organizations and servi...

Abusing Public Third-Party Services for EDoS Attacks

Cloud computing has been widely adopted nowadays as it provides economical, elastic and scalable services to customers. The cloud resources are offered in an ondemand manner and the consumers are charged based on their resource usage, known as “pay-as-you-go”. Such a cloud utility scheme opens the door to Economic Denial of Sustainability (EDoS) attacks in which the cloud consumers would suffer...

Entropy-Based Economic Denial of Sustainability Detection

In recent years, an important increase in the amount and impact of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) threats has been reported by the different information security organizations. They typically target the depletion of the computational resources of the victims, hence drastically harming their operational capabilities. Inspired by these methods, Economic Denial of Sustainability (EDoS) attac...

Attribution of Economic Denial of Sustainability Attacks in Public Clouds

The cloud pricing model leaves cloud consumers vulnerable to Economic Denial of Sustainability (EDoS) attacks. In this type of attacks, an adversary first identifies web resources with high levels of cloud resource consumption, and then uses a botnet of compromised hosts to make fraudulent requests to these costly web resources. The attacker’s goal is to disrupt the economical sustainability of...

Simulation-Based Study of Distributed Denial of Service Attacks Counteract in the Cloud Services

Network availability is threatened by the traditional Denial of Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. The risk is much increased with the emergence of the new computing paradigm of cloud computing. In this era, DDoS attacks can threaten the cloud sustainability by hitting its pricing model exploiting the cloud scalability feature. Therefore, a new phenomenon is emerged...
